What Have I Been Up To?
Here’s just a quick update on what I’ve been doing if you’re following along with me…
Since my last post I’ve been tweaking the look of my site here and there trying to get it looking the way I’d like it to. The thing is, I’m such a perfectionists I’ll probably never get it exactly the way I want it because when I think it looks good, a few days later, I’ll look at it again and think, is there anything else I can do to improve it? Are you like this, not just with websites, but with anything?
I’m terrible for it. It’s almost like an OCD condition I have (although never officially diagnosed) but nevertheless, I think the site’s look will do for now and I’m quite happy to leave it be for now lol! (let me know what you think of the look by leaving your comment below). Besides, there’s more important things to be focusing on at the moment, right? Like adding more and more informative content for you my loyal readers and me concentrating on my Internet Marketing journey 😉
Anyhow, you’ll be pleased to know that’s not all I’ve been doing. I’ve also been setting up a YouTube account for adding any non-secure videos to my site. The ‘Welcome to my blog overview’ on the home page is the first of many. Soon I’ll be linking both the YouTube channel and this blog together with a footer or header link.
I’ll also be creating a Facebook and Twitter account (I think) because it seems to be the done thing these days for keeping in touch with everyone who’s following along.
So, what else have I been up to?
Well to be honest, it’s actually been more behind the scenes stuff above anything else.
Once I’d installed WordPress, I wanted to try and find a suitable theme to use which needed to be quite minimalists and clean looking (my personal preference). Anyway in case any of you are wondering what this WordPress theme is I’m using, it’s based on the Genesis framework and the child theme is called Epik.
Why use this theme and the Genesis framework when there are thousands, if not millions of themes to choose from?
Well believe me, I didn’t make this decision lightly. See, over all my years of learning all things blogs and WordPress, I’ve researched a whole lot about what’s the best themes to use. Is free best, or is paid better? And if paid is best, which one do you use? Phew, the mind can boggle when you see how many themes are available for WordPress!
Here’s a quick tip for you – When you get your site up and running for the first time, it’s a good idea to base your theme decision on what your site will be used for. So for example, if your site is going to be ultimately about selling a digital product, a plugin you get developed, or something along those lines, then I’d highly recommend going with the OptimizePress theme. This theme is built purposely for online marketers who sell digital products. There’s been many others out there attempting to compete with them, but in my opinion, OptimizePress is the daddy for any online marketer.
For me, for this particular site though, the best option was to roll with a blog type theme that offered great SEO value and contained cleanly written code. When it came down to it, my choice was between 2 worthy candidates. The one I’m using right now (Genesis framework) and the Thesis theme. Both have incredibly well written code, they’re both extremely SEO friendly and they also come highly recommended by a great many people. For me though, the Genesis framework came out on top purely because I felt more comfortable using it, and that’s all it was.
At the end of the day, it all really boils down to your own personal preferences, plus, remember what I said about basing your theme choice on what you intend to create your site around. You don’t really want a theme specifically designed to start blogging if you want to use it as say an eCommerce site – make sense?
Okay, I think I’m done for today’s post, so stay tuned…
Until the next time!
